Method
Prep the cereal
- Measure the Chex cereal into a very large bowl and set aside.
Melt the coating
- Melt the white chocolate chips or white melting wafers and the unsalted butter together in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring until completely smooth.
Coat the Chex
- Pour the melted white chocolate coating over the Chex cereal and stir gently until every piece is evenly coated.
- Transfer the coated cereal into a large zip-lock bag, add the powdered sugar, seal, and shake vigorously until all pieces are well coated.
Cool and set
- Spread the coated cereal onto a parchment-lined sheet pan and let cool for 30 minutes until set.
Add the patriotic mix-ins
- Transfer the cooled puppy chow to a large bowl and toss with the red M&Ms and blue M&Ms until distributed throughout.
- Toss again with the red and blue star sprinkles, then serve in a large bowl or portion into individual bags.
Notes
For the smoothest coating, stir the white chocolate and butter between microwave intervals and stop heating once the mixture is glossy. Cool time helps the powdered sugar cling without getting wet—store covered at room temperature for up to 3 days. Freezing is not recommended because M&Ms and sprinkles can soften after thawing. For a gluten-free swap, use a gluten-free Chex cereal if your preferred brand is labeled gluten-free.
